The Riviera – the mythic Mediterranean paradise for celebrities of palaces and beaches - is still cultivating its luxurious and dreamy image. But inland, it also harbours beautiful mountains and valleys dotted with quaint villages that have preserved their authenticity.

The Riviera's saga began in the XIXth century when the mild winters attracted British aristocrats, who were followed by many visitors lured by its landscapes and light.

Prestigious visitors from the four corners of the world have left their mark on the architecture and landscape : "Belle Epoque" palaces and villas, private gardens and tree-lined walkways – landscapes that were immortalised by famous painters such as Renoir, Monet and Signac, then Picasso, Léger, Braque, Miro, Chagall and Matisse.

These visitors, today as well as in the past, were subjugated by the light, the beauty of the sea and mountain views, the harmony of the picturesque cities and villages perched atop limestone spurs and full of delightful structures: churches, chapels, houses, "lavoirs", etc.

Works of art testifying to this richness abound in the innumerable museums across the Riviera: the greatest artists the world over watch over the "beautiful blue".

Nice, with its palaces, hotels and turn-of–the-century buildings, dummy-effect painted façades, flower-lined walkways and palm trees on the irreplaceable "Promenade des Anglais".

Cannes, with its beautiful sand beaches, became a summer seaside resort as early as 1930, and is home of the best known international film festival since 1946, which, southeast of the famous "Promenade de la Croisette", makes visitors dreamy as they gaze across to the Lérins islands.

The principality of Monaco, one of the smallest sovereign states in the world - concentrated on 150 hectares - is both a gambling and fiscal paradise, reputed for the Grand Prix and the Monte-Carlo Rally.
