For our visitors, the Bordeaux region is synonymous with wine and vineyards.
But it also offers a multitude of other attractions : the regional capital, Bordeaux, the ocean, the highest dune in Europe, the biggest forest in Europe (shared with the neighbouring region, the Landes), Arcachon's famous oysters, etc.

The Bordeaux region, with 115,000 hectares of vines and 13,000 winegrowers, is the most extensive "AOC" (wine of controlled origin) area in the world. Who has not heard of the fine wines such as Saint-Estèphe, Médoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes ? The vineyards stretching to the horizon are dotted with castles– indeed, there are more than 10,000 of them !
Many of these wineries accept visits and offer wine tasting, providing an initiation to the Bordeaux wines' secrets, which are shared by prestigious castles and family-owned properties.
Such visits are also an opportunity to stroll through charming wine-growing villages like Saint-Emilion, a picturesque fortified town with steep cobbled roads, charming little squares, shaded cafés, etc.

Bordeaux, capital of the Aquitaine Region, is situated on both sides of the Garonne River, which is called the Gironde in this area. The city's wealth has always depended on wine trading, and the architecture, economy and cultural activities owe much to the world of wine: the XVIIIth century buildings around the Place de la Bourse, the Rohan Palace, and the Grand Theatre. The old part of town has many lovely medieval streets in the Saint Pierre neighbourhood.

The Arcachon Basin presents an exceptional geographical phenomenon, resembling an inland sea, which led to a booming oyster industry around Arcachon, the famous, XIXth-century seaside resort. A visit to the oyster-growing area is a must !
This overview is rounded out with visits to "bastides", typical mansions of the region and to "new" towns from the Middle Ages such as Sainte-Foy-La-Grande, Sauveterre-De-Guyenne, Cadillac and Libourne. Finally, the Landes de Gascogne Park, a forest that was planted by man during the XIXth century, borders on immense, fine-sand beaches.
